What is California poppy?
The California poppy is a flowering plant native to California, but is also found in many regions of central Europe and southern France. It can grow 5-60 cm tall, with alternately branching glaucous blue-green foliage. The leaves are ternately divided into round, lobed segments. The flowers are solitary on long stems, silky-textured, with four petals. The California poppy is most commonly known for its use as a sedative and for its antispasmodic properties; however, unlike its cousin the red poppy, the California poppy is not addictive.
The chemical compounds in the California poppy that produce its favorable effects in the body include isoquinoline alkaloids and cyanogenic glycosides. Although California poppy is closely related to the poppy, it is not a narcotic.
