What is Pygeum?
Pygeum is a plant. It is an evergreen tree found in the higher elevations of central and southern Africa. It is most widely used in France and other European countries. It is most commonly known for its ability to relieve the symptoms of prostate cancer and benign prostate hyperplasia.It is also known as Prunus africanum or Pygeum africanum or African plum. The bark of the pygeum plant is used medicinally.Pygeum bark contains three groups of active constituents: phytosterols (including beta-sitosterol), pentacyclic triterpenoids (including ursolic and oleaic acids) and ferulic esters of long-chain fatty alcohols (including ferulic esters of docosanol and tetracosanol). The Pygeum is standardized to contain 13% total sterols.
